Your chinese production team is ready…
September 22nd, 2007 by JoeOne of the most significant changes which we will see throughout this century will be the ascendance of China. We’re certainly already feeling the effects. Who knows how it all shakes out, but one thing is for certain… the time they are a’changing.
I came across a fascinating photo essay where a photographer got (rarely granted) access to a few Chinese assembly plants. If you run or work with a manufacturing operation in the US, meet the competition…

I find it disheartening to see that the workers are actually wearing “OSHA-like” gear when working on the toys that they send here for our kids to play with. Yes, the factory is clean, the workers “appear” happy, and at this particular meal, they were fed very well. How much of this is for show and how much is authentic is up for debate. They must work long hours though - the two workers napping under a work table.

What I find amusing is that if you look closely in one of the pics, there is a woman sitting on a chair… which is somehow precariously perched on the legs of another chair laid on its side. At least everyone is wearing a hair net!

Workers sleeping at lunch is pretty common, if nothing else than lunch is usually and hour and a half long. Looked to be a decent factory, and the lunch I suspect wasn’t for show. Lots of competition for workers, as there’s a shortage in Guangdong, and they’ll leave for another factory for something as small as decent lunch food.

That tracks with what I’ve heard from colleagues who’ve been over to China on vendor visits. The rapid growth is causing a labor shortage (especially of skilled workers), which over time should lead to improved conditions for all. We’ll see, the autocratic government can act as a break on workers’ issues.
